In the world of advertising, the spotlight usually shines brightest on the creative team — the ones crafting those unforgettable messages or creating those eye-catching ads that turn heads and win awards. But behind the scenes, there’s an equally talented group of people who work tirelessly to bridge the gap between creative execution and client expectations: the account services team.
In the simplest sense, an ad agency’s account services department is responsible for building client relationships by communicating client needs and ensuring that projects flow between various teams in the agency to meet those needs. It’s an essential job; just as there could be no creative work down without a creative team, there could be no client relationship without an account services team.
With such an essential role to play at an ad agency, you might be wondering what it takes to be an effective member of this important team. So we asked a few members of NDG’s account services team to share their keys to success. Here’s what they had to say:
Hustle from Beginning to End
“Refuse to be outworked. If you want to do anything well, the first step is to fully understand it. The second step — and where people generally fall short — is putting your head down and doing everything in your power to see it through. It can’t be understated how important it is to be one step ahead in your work, and the differentiator always comes down to your work ethic.”
-Tim Hoepfl, Account Supervisor
Look for Learning Opportunities Everywhere
“Be open-minded and embrace the idea of being a ‘sponge’ for everything you’re exposed to on a daily basis. There’s a lot of effort involved in taking the initiative to learn in a professional environment, but the more proactive and assertive you are in seeking out learning opportunities, the faster you’ll grow and become trusted by team members and clients alike.”
-Sarah Eckel, Vice President, Account Services
Proactivity Beats Reactivity Every Time
“Don’t wait to be told what to do. In marketing, there’s always something else that can be learned or tried to improve what you’re doing. Make a concerted effort to brainstorm new ideas, ask questions or simply think about what you or your team can do to make things better for your clients.”
-Kate Warnock, Marketing Manager
Make Conquering the Status Quo Your Mission
“The only constant in advertising is change, and our industry’s pace of change is accelerating at an incredible rate. Your clients and the very survival of your agency depends on your ability to stay ahead of the curve by learning and growing every single day. Advertising as a whole, including NDG Communications, is perfectly suited for those who refuse to let the status quo define them.”
-Hillary Theriault, Senior Marketing Manager
